Paging File

By noonan ·
Windows 2k, Sp2.

I have been getting warning messages stating that virtual memory is low. So I proceed to right click on My Computer/Advanced and up the paging file size. No matter what size I set the window states that I only have 20MB allocated. I have set the min at 250MB and the Max at 500mb. I figure that should be more than enough. However, after I reboot the fields where I can change the size remain at the value I set yet the window still says I have 20MB allocated. Am I missing something? Is there another way to allocate virtual memory?

The paging file size limitation is a functions of contiguous space on your hard disk drive. If you have enough free space, then next thing you need to do is go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter and defrag your had disk in order to obtain contiguous free space.

You should also search for *.tmp and delete all those files before defragging. And deleted ~*.* as well as everything in your Temporary Internet Files folder.

Sounds like your drive is low on space. Check and see if you have more than 20MB of drive space on drive C: available (I am assuming your paging file is on drive C: right now).
You can move the paging file to another drive, if you have one.

Hopethis helps.
