Paint, backup + others disappear...

By Blackcurrant ·

On two systems running Windows 95, I have noticed that cdplayer, wordpad, paint and backup have been deleted without any user intervention. I first noticed this on a private machine about two years ago, and more recently, on one of the computers on the work's network. In each instance I replaced the programs using Add/Remove programs, but had to do it twice, as after the first 'restore' they had been deleted again.

The programs in question are infrequently used, except for wordpad, which is used every day. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can you help?

Good Day,

I would suggest running an antivirus program on all of the connected PC's. If those executable files are being targeted regularly, you may have a virus or trogan lurking on the systems, deleting Windows *.exe files. Since all of the programs you listed are located in the Windows directory. Also, if there is no sound card detected during installating, the CD Player application does not install. As for the other programs, the only other possible cause I can think of is during installing of Windows, minimal installation is selected, thereby eliminating non-essential applications from being installed by default.

Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks for answering. The installation was a normal installation and all the programs listed were definitely installed. Also, no virus was detected by up-to-date virus detection software, (some of the programs live outside Windows - e.g. worpad.exe can be found in C:\program files\accessories), so the deletion is not due to any digital nastiness. I do not understand how these programs came to be deleted without user intervention.
