partition hard drive

Depending on what operating system you plan to install, you may be able to partition and format the drive while you install the OS.

This is true for XP and W2K.

Just set your BIOS settings to boot from the CD-ROM drive, and have the XP or W2K CD in the drive.

Follow the instructions, and your drive will be set up automatically.

There is a good article on Partition Philosophy at www.aumha.org

For Windows 9X/Me, you need to boot from the startup floppy that came with the CD.

Runthe program fdisk from the DOS prompt.
You then need to answer Y to enable large hard drive support.

The first step is to create a primary DOS partition, and set it as the active partition.

Depending on how you decide to partition the drive, I would size the Primary partition at just under the size where the cluster size increases.

8185 MB
16378 MB
32760 MB

These numbers are a little lower than the maximum, as I have seen fdisk add a couple of MB to what I have manually set.

Then, create an extended dos partition using the remainder of the drive.

You will then need to define logical drives to use the space in the extended DOS partition.

After defineing the drive, exit fdisk, and re-boot the PC.

Then, format at least the "C:" drive before installing the operating system.

For more information on the fdisk command, and a link to a tutorial, check out www.fdisk.com/fdisk

If the system has WIN98 running on it, then the drive is already partitioned and there's nothing to worry about.
