Partition Magic/w2k boot mgr conflict

By JuanSinMiedo ·
I recently installed w2kPro on my dual boot win98/NT4 machine. I also decided to smooth things out using Partition Magic. W2kPro has a boot manager that seems to conflict with PM. When I boot up PM comes up with the 3 Primary partitions, but only lets me boot into 98. the other 2 OS's leave me at a black screen saying "preparing machine to boot w2k or NT" No matter how long I wait, it never boots. When I boot into 98, I get the boot manager from w2k with the options for win2k Pro, NT4 (disguised as win2k Pro) or win 98. I can then boot into any of the 3 OS's without problem. Any tips as to how to get the Partition Magic to do the job solo? Also how to access the w2k boot mgr and rename the OS's to NT instead of w2kPro? Thanks for the help.

Boot your system into nt4 and then go to accessories and locate disk administrator, this may provide the option you are looking for.

As I recall (since I don't have it in front of me), PM's Boot Manager is run prior to shutdown/reboot. What it does is enable one of multiple boot partitions and disable the current boot partition. The effect will be seen on the next reboot, but Idon't recall anything about it starting any OS immediately.

I'm not sure what version of Partition Magic you are using, but if it's not the latest version, this will be the result.

We attempted to use a previous version of Partition Magic (and was advised that it would recognize Win2k as being NT), and the results were identical to yours. Gets to the OS choice screen and ceases the boot process.

Make sure you have the latest version of Partition Magic, and also check for any updates/patches associated with that version.

Just my $0.02. :)

This makes the most sense to me. I've tried using System Commander and that seems to do the job a bit better. Still no luck with the old Boot Magic. Thanks for the help.
