Partition over 8GB crashes 95/98 SCSI D

By compuboy ·
I have just bought two Quantum 18.2GB Atlas III drives and connected them to an Adaptec 2940 UW card.
I am able to partition the HDs with FDISK (answering Y to large disk support) but when I reboot both win 95 and Win98SE will halt on the splashscreen. This only happens when I use more than 8GB of the drive. If use less of the drive a can boot, format and use the drive with no problems. It also does not matter the size of the partition(s) as long as the total is less than 8GB.
Another twist to this is that if I use Win NT4 or LINUX I can use the entire drive with no problems. After partitioning the drive with NTFS or EXT2? partitions that are over 8GB I can still boot in 95/98.
It seems that my problem is with FAT32

My system:
AMD K7 650MHz
ASUS K7M (I updated the BIOS)
400 WATT PS
128MB SDRAM PC100
Adaptec 2940UW (BIOS 1.22S) INT13 enabled
2 18.2GB QUANTUM ATLAS III
1 9.0GB QUANTUM ATLAS II
1 Plextor 32X CDROM
Sound Blaster PCI 128 3COM NIC 10/100 P

Check and make sure you have the newest bios for the adaptec scsi card for handeling large drives. the other thing ya can do is try another scsi card to see if the problem is still there it could be a glitch with the card you are using.
