Partitioning Questions

by mmalouf . Updated 18 years, 1 month ago

My computer had a 20GB hard drive partitioned into a 8GB primary partition as the ?C? drive and a 12GB extended partition as a ?D? drive.

A co-worker acquired my computer and placed the hard drive into another computer which already has a hard drive set with a single primary partition identified as the ?C? drive. Both systems are running Windows XP, service pack 2. Partitions are NTFS.

Upon adding my old hard drive he now claims that the Windows XP on his system can not see my old ?C? drive. That it is basically a hidden partition. Is this normal?

I ask as he reported this to management accusing me of illegally modifying my system by hiding the partition. Management refuses to listen to me or try and put the hard drive back into the old computer and boot it up.

Don?t know if he installed my old hard drive as a slave on the primary IDE channel or a master on the secondary channel.

How does Windows XP handle a situation where it has two hard drives both with a bootable primary partition? Does that fact that both partitions were initially identified as the ?C? drives matter? Wouldn?t the operating system reassign the drive letters on my old hard drive once his system booted up?
