How do I get a password from Windows XP, Administrator? A password was not used in setup (Home edition), but I cannot login except as a user. In Control Panel/User accounts, Administrator is not displayed. How do I change the Administrator password, so I can logon as Administrator? I press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice to logon, but it wants a password even though there is none. Is there a standard password for Administrator? Please help.

You must boot into Safe Mode (press F8 at boot time) to login as Administrator.

Security Policy

Make sure your old a/c is not locked, also check the Local Security Policy (secpol.msc)
to ensure normal Users have rights to 'Logon locally'.

Thanks for your help. Windows XP home, so options are limited. I was hoping to hide the Administrator account logon as it is for residents in a hotel, but I now realise that is not possible. There will be a strong password and the resident will be restricted with Steady State.

Local Users and Groups

If you can log onto the box with some account that has administrative rights, although the Administrator icon does not show in Control Panel / Users, you can right-click the My Computer object / Manage / System Tools / Local Users and Groups / Users, right-click on Adminstrator and select set password.

If the user account does not have sufficient permissions to reset passwords, then you'll have to seek a third-party product to reset the administrator password, or reload XP.

THE Administrator account...

by boxfiddler Moderator In reply to password

is only available in Safe Mode with WinXP. You can however, while in Safe Mode and in THE Administrator account set yourself up AN Administrator account.

Best way I know of to put this, hope it helps.
