You don't mention which OS you're using, but if it's Win9x you can press <Esc> at the logon screen and bypass the whole process. You can also boot to a command prompt and delete the .pwl file in the Windows folder to remove all passwords. Another possibility is to search the web for a password hacking routine - there are lots of them out there.

If this is a bios password I would check out www.sysopt.com and look for a bios crack there. Laptops might be tougher though if it doesn't have something like an award or AMI. In which case, I would probobly just remove the HD and put it on another system.

If this is 95, answer 1 should work for you. At worst you may have to boot it into safe mode and remove the client for Microsoft or Novell networks to get the windows login.

If it's NT or 2000, there's a utility at www.sysinternals.com that may allow you to change the admin password on the machine. This doesn't always work, but it's worth a try

You can make the system "forget" every password by removing the CMOS battery and every other battery that you find . (There are laptop models with up to 3 different batteries). After that put them back and start !

If problem is with IBM Thinkpad and BIOS password, you unfortunately have to get a new systemboard, as password is written directly into BIOS. With most other laptops, you will still have open machine up, and either find jumper to reset BIOS, or pull CMOS battery for a few minutes. Most laptop batteries are only accessed by taking machine totally apart. You may have to take in to a shop. Quick solution would be to pull hdd and insert in other laptop, then pull info required off, then take in for service.
