Password for Printer

By computer_excel ·
I have peer to peer networking system with 5 computers connected together. Some of the computers are running Windows 98 SE and others are running Windows XP Pro. I want to restrict other users from using HP Color Laserjet 1500L by using password. This printer is connected directly to computer, and it is shared.

Is it possible shared printer to be restricted? If so then what I need to do to make it happen?

Go to the security tab for the printer and only allow authorized users to use the printer. Depending on your printer and how your network is set up, this might work. If it does, you'll be required to log in as the authorized user to print to it.

When you share the printer a password can be added or if it's the windows XP system the share can be restricted to certain users.

For win 98 right click on the printer icon and select shring. Below the share name there's a place for the password.

For XP right click on the printer and select permissions then add the users that you want to be able to use it. You can also create a specific workgroup called something like "printgrp" then add that in the list of permissions. Anytime you need to ad or remove users that have access to the printer you can simply add or remove them from the group. If the user is included in the group he will have whatever that group has available when he logs in.
