password help

i forgot my password (the one needed for logging into my acount) its a windows xp home edition laptop... and i figured i'd ask around the net to see if anyone knew a way to get around the $250 i would end up spending if i sent it into the shop...i have the computer in my hand right now... im using my other computer (my desktop win98?) to ask around...
i hope someone can help me...

Did you password protect the default administrator account? Or are you talking about an account you setup? Try booting up in safe mode (tap F8 while the computer is booting) choose safe mode and when it asks for a username and password enter administrator and leave the password blank and press enter. Hopefully you are now booted up and then go into control panel user accounts and change the password for your account. I generally find that it is a good idea to have 2 administrator accounts on a computer just for this sort of problem.

didnt work...
the admin acount i know the password for...
its the login screen for windows that i dont have a password for... and its the only acount... no guest acount... just one acount that i forgot the password for...

ANSWER : there was another question similar to this . There were many recommendations . Please do a search further down in this q & a section . I don't think people would repeat themselves over . Better to direct you there . Try the recomendations before spending the 250 bucks.

im just gonna spring for the shop... i need my computer back more then i need not to spend the money...
