Password Protect Shares

By Digital_DNA ·
I'm running a small workgroup network. All machines are Windows XP. I would like to password protect my shares on the network. At the moment when I attempt to access a share on the network, the computer automatically connects. I don't have to enter a password. I believe the first time I connected I did have to provide a password. How do I configure so that I have to enter a password every time I attempt to access a share?

XP shares on workgroup computers are managed on per user basis per machine. You will not be able to password protect each individual share. You will only be able to allow certain users who have accounts on the target machine access to the share. Most likely you entered the admin password for the box you connected to and the admin password on the machines is most likely the same.

You need to set permissions for the shares. Right click on the shared folder and select Properties, then select Permissions. You can add users that you want to have access and delete those that you don't. By default shares are set for everyone. This is better since no password is needed.
