Password protecting folders in W2K

By Iseekthegrail ·
Is there a way to password protect folders on a W2K server where the folder is shared and several users access a single workstation with a shared domain login?
These shared workstations need to remain as they are, but specific folders need to be accessed only by the Shift Foremen and HR personnel, hence the need for password protection of the folder.

Unless the users who are sharing the same user account each have their own computer, then NO.

MS recomends that everybody has their own account.

Once they each have their own account create groups such as "Foremen" and "HR Personnel".

Placethe foremen user accounts into the foreman group, and the HR personnel into the HR group.

Browse to the shared folder you want to set permissions on. Right click on it and select "properties".

Click on the "Security" tab.

Click the "Add" button.

Select the group that you want to access the selected folder and then click "Add"

Click OK and then OK again.

Repeat for all shared folders.

As an alternative to creating accounts for everyone. Create a shared account for each of the "groups". And set permissions on the folders based on that particular shared account. Such as "HRuser" and "Foreman". This however is not recommended.

Hope it helps

I forgot to mention that after selecting a group that you want to give access to a particular folder on, Select either the "write" or "full control" checkbox. otherwise they will only be able to "read".

I'm already familiar with assigning permissions to folders and users to groups. These are in place. My HR users want to be able to share info with the Shift Foremen in a shared folder w/o workers who share the Foreman's PC's also being able to access this info. However the Sforemen have a habit of not wanting to logout due to the 24/7 operation of our business and shift changes.

In our scenario there are multiple users sharing the same machine & the data was availble in shared mode where we want a solution to protect the Folder specific data with password without tweaking any permissions on different user accounts & in that scenario we have found the software that completely met our requirement in an effective way & that is nothing but Protect A Folder utility available on http://www.protectafolder.com/
