Password Protection - Internet Directory

By yapa ·
I need to supply an internet directory with password protection. If I use the encrypted NT password, users not on our own network (perhaps without Microsoft Client installed?) receive an access denied message.
Using the NT text-based password isthought to be a security risk.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a viable password protection system for a file/directory live on the internet, running from an NT server?

How about using a secure (ssl) web page to ask for the password and then link the user to the directory?

To get this done you need SSL installed and only enable it on the pages you wish to have secured.
your home page (HTTP://www.yapa.com/home) can carry a link to a secure site (HTTPS://www.yapa.com/secured)

In the MMC Create a new site or open the properties of the site you desire to be secure and add port 443 to the SSL Port entry. Simple huh?

this will let anonymous users browse public pages and only allow domain authenticated user accounts access to the sites you want.

You can create individual user accounts for your internet users or have them use their domain accounts (if they are domain users) or create a single account and disperse the password among those with the need to access the pages. I personaly would not use a single account dispersed among internet users if the data was sensitive.
