Password Protection on a MS Word 97 File

By jkatz ·
Recently a user here password protected a document in MS Word 97'. This is a file he uses and password protects often.

When he attempted to open and un-password protect the document so that he could work on it, the password he thought he entereddid not work - he has tried many different combinations, (i.e. Caps, Lower Case, etc...), but to no avail.

Is anyone aware of any utilities or backdoors that would allow us to bypass or hack through the password protection, or is this user screwed and will he have to completely re-write his documents.

There are utilities called crackers that do this. One for word is called AW97PR. A search for it returned this URL where you can get a shareware version of it:

Hope this helps.

remove the space between "...Add-in" and "s/aw97..." in the URL.

Looks like this utility was just what the doctor ordered. Although, I did end-up going to the site of the compnay that wrote the software (www.elcomsoft.com), instead to see what other products they had - so I purchased their "Advanced Office 2000 Pro" password recovery tool (works for all versions of MS Office). It works smoothly and easily it seems - no fuss, no muss. ;-)

Although a little pricey ($150), it was more than worth it to the user so we could use the files.

Thanx for your help.

If I had the time, I am pretty sure I could hack through and convert the hex code, but at this time, I don't have the time right now.
