Patch Panel Configuration

By MGMMCP ·
I have just installed a new patch panel. I have plugged an RJ45 cable into the Hub and to the patch panel and I am not getting a link light on the Hub.

I don't have a tester to scan the wiring, do I use a straight wire connection or a crossover connection? Should I get a link light on the Hub if I don't have anything plugged into the port on the wall?

Please advice.

You will only get a link light on the hub if there is a live NIC on the other end so to answer your question: No. If there is nothing plugged into the wall, there will be no link light on the hub.

If the patch panel is wired correctly, the cables between the panel and the hub and between the wall outlet and the computer will both be straight-through cables. Generally, a crossover cable is only used for a hub-to-hub or computer-to-computer connection.
