Patching Cat5 through telephone outlets

By Sprocket ·
I need to patch a Cat5 data cable through to another room, but the only cabling avaliable in the building is telephone.
What pin outs do i need to do this? From cat5 cable to 4 wire (RJ11) plug then 4 wire (RJ11) plug to cat5 cable.

I do not need fast data through this cable, so 4 wires should be enough, but i just need the pin outs for the PCs to work on the network.

For CAT 5 1&2 and 3&6 are used. You can just run these four through the connections and you should be ok... it'll be a little ugly but... it should work fine. Here is a great site for the pin outs.

All you would do is strip out those wires and hook them through the phone jack.

Just make sure that if your going PC to PC you cross your transmit and recieve (Cross-over cable) and if your going from PC to switch you use a straight through cable.

I didn't say it's be pretty... I just said that it's work. I do agree with sgt_shultz though... this might be something that you want to hide beind a desk or a filing cabnit! Besides... I don't think that the data loss will be horendous... and it's free!

good thing u don't need fast data. that would be so ugly don't do it. imho by the time you do all the work to 'patch' from next room you might as well have run a cable. which is lots more downtown in case anybody ever discusses this jobe later with anybody. i am just saying. if some money, how about a phone line network such as this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=211

i have to say i wouldn't recommend such a solution to a business. if i did, i would give disclaimer, 'until you can get place properly wired'. and 'heads up: building does not meet needs now so what about future growth'? 'remember to include infrastructure in the budget' yada yada
