PC Anywhere - cannot start service

By dcoyle ·
Has anyone seen this error message before, on trying to start PC Anywhere (both 9.x and 10.x versions):
No object was specified. Maybe because you are starting Host for the first time, using Services Control Panel Applet.
To start try:
1) Specify the name of the Be a Host file (*.BHF) in start parameters for the Host, using Services Control Panel Applet.
2) Start Host from PC Anywhere manager.
3) Open a Be a Host file in Explorer.

Notes to above: I believe I could start the services, no problem up to recently. After installing VNC (a free Remote Session utility) this may have started happening. I uninstalled VNC. After that, and a re-boot, I got the above eror message (still).
I tried no.2 above to no avail. No's 1 and 3 I'm not sure how to do...
Any help appreciated. Thx in advance!

PC Anywhere - cannot start service

Normally, when pcAnywhere runs as a service, the service does not start until you actually start a host or remote session. Therefore, if you try to start the service manually without having a host session defined, you get the error message you've described. It sounds like somehow your .bhf files (these are the ones where the host settings are defined) got moved or possibly deleted. Open pcAnywhere from the Start menu, then delete any host objects that you see in there and recreate them. This should resolve the problem you're having with pcAnywhere. BTW, I have run VNC and pcAnywhere together on the same machine at the same time many times and do not have any problems with either application. So, if both apps are properly configured, you _should_ be able to use them at the same time. Hope this helps!

Tried to delete and re-create the host objects. I had to re-install PC Any and then VNC, in that order.
Thx aqnyway!

This is a peculiar problem as you have two remote control tools installed on your system at the same time. As far as NT is concerned there is a unique DLL file that is used my remote control tools. The norm is that you can only run one remote control tool at the same time. If you have remote control tools installed make sure that one service is disabled for the other.

In your case while you uninstalled VNC, which is likely to be an unregistered product you might have uninstall a vital DLL file. My advice is to re-apply service pack and re-install software.
