PC automatically reboot itself

By dsang_2k ·
Upon booting up, there is a message saying as follow: Primary IDE pin 80 is not installed. I changed the IDE cable but it is still the same. I suspect that the hard drive is the culprit. Can someone help me on this. Thanks

by sgt_shultz In reply to PC automatically reboot i ...

here is what i would do:
i would stick in a virus check floppy or a bootable cd.
i would boot up computer and enter system bios. i would look to see what the primary boot device is set to and what other hard drive settings i could find. i would try to force a hard drive redetection if i had that option. i would make sure it didn't say 'not installed' under any of the hard drive configurations.
then i would change the boot device to use what ever boot disk i was using and watch the boot. by this time i know whether or not to expect to be able to type c: at a command prompt and read the hard disk. if you conclude after all this that the hard drive looks bad, take it out and install it as a slave on another computer, then note the model and go to mfg website, download and run diagnostics.
