PC boot up disk failure; boot.ini change

by skeshav . Updated 17 years, 3 months ago

My PC has strange problem while booting on good old GVC motherboard. C drive has Win98 OS on FAT. Later I have installed XP Pro on 40GB D: which is on NTFS.

Suprisingly boot happens only from C drive where Win98 is residing may be since it has ntldr, ntdetect, boot.ini files on C drive. So unless C drive works my PC cant even boot.

I wanted to change so as to boot from D to XP, just incase older C goes dead. For this, I have copied all the above files to D-drive and also edited boot.ini file to reflect the change of boot sequence. Next,

1. Disabled C drive in BIOS and changed the boot sequence appropriately to boot from D drive… no good

2. Apart from this, I physically set the datacable to D-drive as IDE1 master but still no good

I get to see ‘Boot disk failure… insert system disk…’ all the time it tried to boot from D. Btw, all HDD are IDE UDMA
based. NO SATA

How can i get around this probem. Please help me
