pc connections

I am trying to connect two laptops with a crossover cat5e cable for file sharing. They both run windows XP and I have tried to run the network setup wizard in xp but I cannot get the two to connect. I am obviously doing something wrong. Does anyone know of a step by step article that will walk me thru the correct steps?
