PC crash -how to read dump file?

by alant . Updated 22 years ago

I’ve just suffered a complete disc crash whilst viewing ebay. There was a click and the PC rebooted itself – there was then a blue screen of death which flashed on too quickly to read anything, then another reboot. I can’ t get out of this loop – trying “last known good” or “safe mode”, still gives the blue screen and reboot. I tried putting the Cd in and going to recovery, then running fixmbr , bootcfg /rebuild and chkdesk, but nothing helped.
So I re-installed windows into a new directory c:\winnew and it installed OK. I can now see all my original files, but can’t run any of the programs or use the modem. (it says device is working properly, but any attempt to dial gives a “no dial tone” message.

Questions: Is there a known virus vicious enought to do this? I had windows firewall on and Sophos anti-virus running (and a scan after the event revealed nothing).
Although I can’t read the blue screen, it creates a file dump4226.tmp each time. How do I read it? Notepad produces a screen full of the same word.
Does this sound like a hard disc fault? As I say chkdsk says its OK, but its an NTFS disc, so I don’t know if there are better tools.
Any further suggestions welcome.
