PC does not start...drives are good!

By bstirling ·
I have a problem with my PC. It seems to have blown the motherboard. I've check the drives and put them in another PC and they are fine. Now for the problem...if I try to boot this PC with the moved drive it wants me to register. I tried to do telephone registration as the 'net connection is not working yet but the response was that it wasn't a valid code I entered. I'm running XP Home. I don't really want to reinstall the OS since I don't want to have to reinstall apps as well. Any ideas?

Activating Windows XP

by bcpgm In reply to PC does not ...

I think you meant Activation not Registration. Activation is mandatory that must be done when there was a clean installation of Windows or a significant HW change.

When you activate over the phone (877 number), Windows XP generates Installation Codes. These are 9 sets of 6 digits. Based on those, MS would give you Confirmation Codes, which finishes Activation, provided that the Product Key is legitimate. All you have to do is to explain MS what happened (MB died and you replaced it). As long as you did not use the Product Key on different system(s), you should not have any problems of activation.

You are correct about Activation and this is the original OS from the former PC. I will give that a shot tonight.

More details

The phone number is 1-877-571-2048.

I should have said ID instead of Code:Installation ID and Confirmation ID.
