PC Freezing

By charliec ·
I recently had to put together a new computer using an ASUS motherboard (P4P800S) Intel Celeron 2.0GHz processor, 512mb ram, 80gig Western Digital HDD and a new power supply. THe motherboard has on-board audio and LAN connections and I am using an S3 video card. After loading Windows NT 4.0 workstation when I try to double click on any desktop icon or insert an auto-run cd the computer freezes. If I try to install Windows 98 SE the computer freezes on the Starting Windows for the First Time Screen? Help!!!!!

Have you tried rebooting in safe mode and checking your settings and to see if it continues to freeze? I had it happen to me before and I almost took a bat to the computer. instead I went into safe mode and my desktop properties were all befuddled. good luck.

I'm not sure about NT, but the problem for installing W98 is that you have too much system RAM.

There is a bug in the core Windows 9X code that causes a number of problems if there is more than 511MB of system RAM.

What is happening is that Windows mis-reads the amount of RAM and does not set up the system cache locations properly.

I limit my W9X boxes to between 196 MB and 384 MB of RAM just to avoid this problem.

Windows 98 actually runs faster with 196MB of RAM than it will with 500MB of RAM.

Look like a good system but many problem are here with the system. processer is fine if the many mobo will take it 512 may be a little high for 98 I don't know I never try I do know that you will not get the full use of the hard drive If I remember right 98 can only handle 8GB of space I may be totally off. but other than that everything is fine. You might want to check to getting the still high prices WinXP. TigerDriect for about 159 oem
