pc locking up

Hey, man.If I were trouble shooting this problem, I'd boot it up off of a dos boot disk, or PC doctor or some type of dos based util. Could also make a quick batch file that like gives you a directory of your c: drive over an over again,if it locks in dos from a clean (virus free) boot disk then sure get the voltages off the power supply, 3.3 should be really close, I'd say no more then 3.5, and 5v no more then 5.3, 12v close also, check the -12 also. Also move your volt meter over to ac insteadof dc, and check'em all again, I beleive that you should have no more then 500mv of ac coming down any wire.If your power is good, start removing extra device like CDrom, modem, sound, one at a time till it's stable, also first though, run a current, current, current virus scan from dos. Later... Luke

My first suspect would be your video drivers. Video drivers will lock up a machine at the most inopertune times, including bootup. I went through this with a nvidia card.

Another thing that you may wish to check is you CPU fan. It does not take but SEVERAL seconds to overheat one. Also make sure that there is not any ribbon cables or power cables on or near the CPU (except the power for the fan). Make sure that the case fans are not obstructed while you are doing this check.

While in the case, do a little housekeeping. **** it out! :)

Paul.

Most common cause would be a processor temp problem, check your fan to see if it is running, also check for proper fan speed.
