PC locking up

By geoffers ·
If I select a desktop icon, right click and select Properties from the drop down menu, my PC locks solid. It does so without my having been shown the properties I wanted to view. I have to reboot as there is no other way to free up the system. Ctrl/Alt/Del simply brings up the "busy waiting to shut down" message.

PC locking up

Try to quit all programs with the taskmanager that run in the background first to see if that still does it.
If not that et least you know that one of the programs that you load at startup is causing this.

Sounds like the video driver may be causing this, check to see if you video driver is the correct one for that hardware and or update it. I have had the same problem as you. System would hang and not display the properties.

I'll try that. Tried Peter's suggestion and even with just Explorer running I had same problem. I am running 98 Lite Pro and think that might be the root cause. I'll try the video driver (Matrox G400) but this is a recent problem and I've had that card for a year or two now with no earlier problems.
