PC Locks up when idle

By dkrohn66 ·
hello all, i have a 1.5 gig machine with an intel 845 motherboard and 528mg ram

lately its been locking up on me, usually when its idle. the power saving settings are all off.

when heavy processing is going on ( ie, games ect) i have no problems.

its always a hard freeze too, cant get to task manager cant get caps light on ect, always have to reset.

it started around the time i added a 2nd harddrive. i've made sure that the ide drivers are all the most current. the only other thing that has changed is that MS media player has been loaded and i cant get rid of it as you know.

there does seem to be a hesitation or delay when accessing that 2nd drive, gut feeling tells me its something with this but not sure.

might it benefit me to get a memory defrag type software or that norton software to try to stop the hard freezes.

yes, the power settings to put the harddrive "to sleep" after so many minutes. they are both off in windows and in the bios.

Two things come to mind that I have had problems with in the past.

First, ensure all your video drivers are up to date and that you have it all set up correctly.

Second, check out the NIC drivers are all up to date and correctly set up.

I had a problem that I managed to fix for a while by changing my video settings (I had a less than ideal aperture set up in BIOS), but after a few months of working all right the problems I'd been having came back and I finally narrowed it down to a bad NIC that was crashing my computer. Replaced the NIC and everything has ran smoothly since.

i have a cable modem so in a way that is a nic card yes? from what i have seen the cable modem is working fine and yes i have all the latest video drivers.

could it be my memory is getting to fragmented by some task?

I might try a memory management package and see if there is any change. i shall let you know.

You mentioned that you are using a cable modem. Might you also be using Zone Alarm? I have run into problems w/ ZA (vsmon.exe) locking up my system when I leave it running in backround and system is idle. Only solution I have found is to disable ZA or shut down PC.

Good Luck :-)
