PC Loses Network After 5 minutes

By williams887 ·
I'm running Windows XP. I connect to a network running Windows NT 4.0. After my computer boots up I can see everthing on the network. I can connect to our servers and grab files if I need them. However, after 5 or 10 minutes, my PC loses the abilityto connet to these servers and other workstations. What is going on? It tells me that it cannot find the specified path or I may not have permission to view the selected resources. Please help!!!

does reboot fix it? then, i say it's wiring.
my first thought is: this is hardware. bad NIC or bad wiring. try another NIC, try different patch cable/wall jack...
my favorite way to t-shoot wiring is with a really long known good patch cable. i use it to bypass 'bad' patch cable and wall wiring and go directly to hub/switch (to a known good port on hub/switch).

"log users off after idle time is reached" or maximum session time limit is reached, security features the domain controller implements may be what's happening. If you can reboot and log on or log off and then back on sucessfully then I would look there. Another possibility is that your NIC has a power down option that is enabled. When the computer is idle, the O/S will power down the NIC to conserve power. Trouble shooting link states and problems is not an easy task.

Note: I can see the some of the network but cannot connect to what I see. It tells me to check and make sure I have permission. I'm an administrator on the network so this should not be a factor. This is very weird!

I had the same problem with a new XP on my LAN, it would lose connection after 1/2 hour after each re-boot. As a work-around I ended up assigning that PC a static IP address and haven't had a problem since. I would still like to know what the issue was.

I was having the same problem, the last guy is close to right, but having a static IP address is a risk to your network, security wise. You need to get additional IP addresses from your internet provider. It cost me $5.00 extra per month for fiveIP addresses. Reasonable and it solved my problem.

If you are connected to a switch you made need to fiddle with the link speed/duplexing. If auto select is enabled the NIC and the switch may agree on the speed but might not quite agree on the duplexing. This will cause all kinds of wierd networkingproblems. Make the switch and the NIC talk the same speed/duplex.
