    PC Memory

    Locked

    by cpeteu ·

I have a Abit BM6 motherboard, an intel celeron 400 and 64 MB pc100 sdram (1 dimm. When I install additional dimm with 128 MB PC100 ram win98 refuses to start. Remove either dimm and it works. What can be the problem?

The problem may be that your computer may not be able to handle that kind of upgrade. All I can suggest is buy a newer mother board.

This is a 440bx chipset. It should support 768 megs of ram. The manual states that you should be able to populate the slots in any configuration. The only thing I could suggest is clearing the cmos and rebooting with both chips in place. You canget the manual at this link.http://www.abit.com.tw/english/index.htm

Good suggestion, however the bios does see the memory. It counts up to 192 mb’s. No version of windows will load

Could it be as simple as booting to the BIOS on setup so the mobo can recognize the memory, verifying found amount, saving changes and exiting?

Well, from what I’ve seen, most motherboards want each stick of RAM to be the same amount, either 2 64mb sticks or 2 128 mb sticks. This might be why if you just put the one in, it would run fine. If you could get your hands on another 64mb stick or 128 mb stick, check it out. (check price watch for the cheapest pc100 prices)
      Hope it helps,

Make sure the 128mb is in bank 0. The problem is likely either in dram timing or speed. Check to see if both are cas latency 2 or 3. I’ll bet there different. Some setup utilities will allow the user to set the module that is cas 2 down to cas 3 butnot vice-versa. both should either be displayed as 2-2-2 or 3-3-3 in bios setup. Hope this helps…….

Can the memory cas rating be determined by looking at the dim

All memory chips are not the same. You need to get the SDRAM chips that Abit recommends for it to work properly.

Have you put the 128 MB chip on the 1st DIMM slot, and the 64 MB chip on the 2nd Dimm?

Good luck and have a great day.

sometimes machines will have problems because the dimms aren’t matched in either chip density, single/double-sidedness, CAS setting…
