When I rename a computer on our company network or re-image the computer, the old name is still ‘live’ somewhere. I cannot name a rebuilt pc or a different pc with the old name. We’re running Windows 2000 Server, TCP/IP via DHCP and all of the desktops are Windows 2000 Pro.
1. Before shutting down to re-image the pc I run “ipconfig /release all” to clear the IP & NIC.
2. All pc’s are shutdown at the end of the day though still connected to the network.
3. Is there a function or utility for the server that could release unconnected NIC’s(MAC’s)/IP’s/Names that would allow for the re-use of a computer name?
(Could this problem potentially use up an entire block of IP address?
4. I vaguely recall someone mentioning they had written a batch file that could do what I need but, I don’t know how or what to write. Thanks in advance. 3Dtrumpet
