If your running windows 98 or windows 98se. You can execute msconfig from the run box and start disabling and enabling drivers. Normally this trouble is caused by some fx driver. Could be video or sound. Check for updates at manufacturers site for your products.

You could also try this update available from the MS website.

Another possibility is that you may need the "Windows 98 shutdown patch" This has been a known problem, especially with Windows 98 that has any networking services installed (as in those used for internet access, etc.) and uses mapped drives. Check out http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com for that or other relevant patches/updates

HI
The very first thing you can try is to delete all tmp files then run a through scandisk and a defrag, before you install any patches or registry changes.

We had similar situations with our users with WIN98 having to wait forever to shutdown their PCs.

Try this if it will work in your case:

Run Regedit and go to this key location:

HK_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion

Under this key, create a sub-key and call it Shutdown.
Within Shutdown sub-key, create a DWord and call it LogoffSetting and assign a decimal value of 3

Still within Shutdown sub-key, create another DWord and call it ShutdownSetting and assign a decimal value of 3

Close the RegEditor.

Caution: Be careful in editing your registry as it may screw up everything!!!

Shutdown your PC and restart for the changes to take effect. The next time you try to shut down, it should shut down completely.

Hope this help!
