    PC O/S Restore

    Locked

    by ckdutta ·

My HP 8565C (Pentium win98) had some problem and I was told to reinstate Win98 from the system recovery CD (supplied by HP). The recovery CD did not had autorun.inf or any starting exe. It will be grateful if any of you can clarify this, even if theCD does not have a starting exe (autorun.exe, etc) how can after reboot, the CD will start by its own. Even HP support told me that this will work even after I recreate the partition. Please HELP

You need to find where the setup.exe file is on the HP disk. Just try typing in “setup.exe” – it usually works, if not type “dir /p” to see the disk contents

Go into the bios and make sure the boot order has the CD listed first. also, on some of these types of PC’s there is a boot floppy that will go to the CD. In this case, make sure the floppy drive is the first boot device in the bios. your book should be able to tell you how to get to the bios. I would be careful since there are some cases where it starts over and your harddrive is wiped and goes back to the way it came from the vendor. ie, your stuff is gone. so, i would backup some data to another media first.

Thanks for the reply. I have not understood the phrase “on some of these types of PC’s there is a boot floppy that will go to the CD.” Please clarify. I did change the boot sequence in all the order (first with CD drive at the top and also with floppy as the first drive). Nothing helped me.

You can check the REGISTRY by typing regedit from the run box look at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentContolSet\Services\CDROM,the auto run value should be set to 1
If you reformatted the hard drive you will need to reinstall the CD ROM drivers, this may be causing your problem
To load operating restore why not use the RUN box and locate locate the cd rom and then run the program from thios point.

i know that on some Hp’s or compaq’s, there used to be a recover floppy disk that one had to boot from. once the pc booted from that floppy, it would access the recover CDrom drive and re-install what was needed. maybe the newer pcs do it straightfrom the cd.

Hi have you tried setup.exe?? I know that on my compaq I can put in the restore disk and reboot it will start the restore process, I believe they do it through the tools that are loaded on the disk from factory. If it does not work try boot from startup disc choose cd-rom support and when the A: promt comes up look to see what the letter is for cd change to this and then type setup.rocky
