    Locked

    by jonhenri_roman ·

PROBLEM: PC reboots after I’ve been logged in for at 10minutes. Tried switching hard drives, but the problem still exists. I’ve reinstalled Windows as well as all my other software applications, but it still reboots. I’ve checked my fan, no problem, checked my power supply, no problem. The specs of my machine are as follow:

    Intel Celeron 2.4GHz Processor
    256MB DDR333 DIMM (2x128MB)
    128MB GeForce FX5200 Graphics Card
Western Digital 20GB Hrad Drive (Windows & Software)
Western Digital 60 Hard Drive (Games Drive)
Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 Installed

The machince is a about 5 years old already and has had numerous upgrades.

      Software point of view :

Service Pack 2? hmm… i heard there is rumour some people got a lot of trouble after installed service pack 2. you should backup everything and reformat it (no service pack 2), since you also has done numerous upgrade, trust me windows doesnt last very long in terms of stability :p

      Hardware point of view :

check the case, motherboard, power supply, and ram make sure it is seating properly. there is possibility of short-circuit and cause pc suddenly to reboot. if i were you i will just try to clean-up and reassemble everything, except the cpu.

Have you tested your RAM, if not go to Memtest86.com and download MemTest let it run for a while and see if it gives you any problems.

Check the BIOS settings, the value of system temperature. You can set this value to 70 degree C. If still persist the problem, check your hardware configuration in DEVICE MANAGER. Do you install the motherboard drivers? If you done all this, try to install a LINUX OS, and see if working OK. Let me know what?s happened.

I installed Linux OS, but the problem still exists. I kinda get the feeling that it could be my hard drive, cause when I install windows on my 60GB, it works fine. But as soon as I install Windows back on my 20GB, it starts booting again. I don’t want to install Windows on my 60GB as I specifically partitioned the drive for my media and games.

You must verify the two drives jumpers. Try to install to separate IDE. Check also the jumpers for be master. If you install to the same IDE cable set the jumpers of 20 GB drive to master and set slave the 60 GB drive.
