1) Could be a virus. go to start and run shutdown -a and hit enter. If you have xp uncheck restore right click on my computer select properties, sytem restore and check the one that states turn off system restore. Update your virus scanner and your spyware utiity then run both and delete what they find. if you dont have an AV program download stinger.exe it will find any viruses that cause your machine to restart. Once that is done restart the machine and you uncheck the box to turn off system restore.

2) Your powersupply may be going bad.

I've seen this in older machines where reinstalling SP3 fixed the issue (WinNT) and the other was a hooped Hard Drive. You didn't give enough info to really be of help but I would suggest first re-running setup and just letting it replace the system files, withuout completely reformatting your drive.

If you poseted some more system specs and whether or not you can boot into safe mode, that would really help.
