PC reboots with patch cable plugged in, but ok if unplugged

By andre ·
Hi there..

I am seeing a rather weird scenario with a PC on my network at work.

If I boot the system with the network cable attached, it does a reboot at the "Applying Computer Settings" screen, and will go into a reboot loop at this point.

However, if I unplug the network cable, I am able to get to the login screen, at which point I can plug the cable in, and all works great until the next reboot.

I tried searching google, but have not really seen anything out there that shares these symptoms. There is nothing in the event logs, and the system is not throwing up a BSOD, just rebooting.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Andre

BSOD's usually caused by drivers

So I would look into if there are other versions of drivers for your NIC and try changing driver versions, either forward or backwards in versions till you can find a stable one.

It's a good idea to make a system restore point or a ghost image of your machine before trying this.

Are you using this computer at home or at work?

Usually when it gets to applying computer settings and reboots it has something to do with a group policy setting, constructed on your network.

Let us know where you use the computer and the Operating System and we will try to help further.

Sorry

I didn't read well enough you do use it at work. Then it is most likely a Group Policy that is trying to be applied when booting your computer up on the network. For some reason it is not working on your computer specifically.

You would have to contact your administrator to see if there is a script that is causing this problem. A good way to check is to see if there is any documentation of any GPO changes recently on your Server. This is assuming you are using Microsoft products.

I am the Admin, and there have not been any recent changes to Group Policy. I will be trying other suggestions in the thread.

Thanks for your help!

We need the stop code

by Jacky Howe In reply to PC reboots with patch cab ...

My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery and untick Automatically restart. While you are there make sure that Small memory dump (64 KB) is selected and the output is %SystemRoot%\Minidump.
Hopefully you will be able to read the code.
If it is this STOP: 0x00000050 check this link.

Sounds like something my co-worker just ran into a couple weeks ago... move the machine to a different port/jack and try it out.
