PC Restarting

By pduffy569 ·
I have wipe and reinstalled a pc with windows 95 and then 98 but the pc keeps restarting its self. I takes 3 restarts before it will stay started and then sometimes it will suddenly reboot when working in a program. What is causing this?

It could be just about anything. Look for any conflicts between devices, once you get the thing booted up, use msconfig to disable the programs and services loaded when windows boots, see if this makes a difference. Or it could be a hardware problem, flakey power supply maybe?

Good luck.

My experience is that 8 times out of 10 it's either a memory problem or a board or memory module that needs re-seating. It invariably happens after a system has been moved. Try reseating boards & check that retaining clips for RAM Modules are correctly positioned.

If you have another power supply try swapping it out. A faulty fan caused reboots in a machine I had, but that happened after the Power Supply heated up after being on for awhile without cooling. Maybe your board isn't seeing a stable supply of power. At least this is an easy place to start.

My bet would be the RAM. either one needs re-seating (like one of the above answers) or it's going bad. Try another DIMM and see if it does the same.

I had a PC that did the same, re-boot randomly and sometimes when you touched the case it would re-boot. It could be a faulty power supply, or a short between the case and components. In short, try a new power supply, or a new chassis (case).
good luck!
