    Pc shuts off intermittently

    Locked

    by rg11 ·

I have a compaq evo d310 and I started having problems with the computer shutting off on its own. I had it shut down while I was working on it but it usually shuts down while I am away from it. What can cause this other than internal components getting too hot.

Forgot to mention, this is on a network, the PC has XP Pro SP2 and Norton antivirus which gets updated weekly.

Have you checked the event logs? If its a software event there should be something there to give you a hint.

The power settings could be set to force it into hibernation, which can appear to be be “off.”

      Check those also.

This is a new power saving feature.

      No, just kidding.

I would start with looking at the event logs, you will be looking for something with a Red X logo next to it. It will most likely be in the Application or System log. Get there by going to

Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –> Administratiive Tools –> Event Viewer

Do this as soon as you turn the computer back on. And look for the last few entrys just before it shut off. You will see the date/time stamp in the log. Double-Click on the entry and it will give you a synopsis of the entry. You should be able to track back to the last few shutdowns and narrow down the problem. Compare a regular shutdown with the irregular shutdown, if you need to help narrow it down.

Nothing unusual in the event log, no problems. I do notice the hard drive grinding some when it wasnt doing that before..

The following website has a good page on troubleshooting XP shutdowns:

      Hope it helps.

      Over heating will cause this.

Either the video card or the CPU.

Check that the fans are working correctly and the system is free from dust. Make sure that the powersupply is clean as well.

I had the same problem with two Evo 510 systems at the office. The problem on both of them was in the event viewer; the system reported a bug and initiated a shutdown. The resolution was to wipe the hard drives and do a clean reinstall of the OS.

In any event, open the case and completely clean out all dust in the system. Both of my systems were also dirty and I cleaned them out to help with the thermal management even though that wasn’t the cause of the problem. Also, in both the BIOS and the OS, turn off all power saving features except the monitor. I have had a lot of problems with hard drive power down, suspend mode and hibernation not waking up properly and turn them all off.

The EVO’s have a rather limited Power Supply and that could be your problem or power surges from the mains could be causing the PS to shut down when not wanted.

To try to prevent this I generally fit UPS’s to all Evo’s and that seems to negate the problems that I’ve run into with them shutting down when not wanted.

      Hi!
If this helps . . . We have has a couple of EVO510s that did this same thing but they were still under warranty. HP sent out a tech and they relaced the power supply;motherboard; and processor along with the internal fans. I would lean heavily toward the power supply more than anything else. Hopefully – your Evo 310s are still under warranty and perhaps you can get them repaired in the same way. Good Luck! Thanks! LLH

if there are any damaged components, the sytem could lock seemingly randomly, and never log an error or alert. Try removig any components that are not absolutely essential.

I saw a similar case a couple months ago that was caused by a faulty wireless pcmcia device which visually looked fine, but had been damaged enough to cause strange lockups or shutdowns.

You should also make sure that you have the latest drivers for all devices.
