General discussion

pc slooowing dowwwnnn

By Techjunkie ·
My pc has slowly begun to slow down on it's response times in opening applications and running programmes. I've checked for spyware, virus', defragged, reinstalled (upgrade), msconfigged but no improvement at all. example WMPlayer repeatedly crashed repeatedly when opened, Firefox takes 1 minute plus to open, etc, etc. Would a reformat of harddrive and creation of partitions be worth doing? any advice greatfully received. Thanks

At what point

I'll go the reformat route when it is quicker than other solutions, or when I've already wasted the same amount of time.

On my home machines ...

I used to reformat and reinstall about once a year for M$ operating systems. That definitely cleared out the viruses et. al.

Now I rarely use M$. I prefer to use Linux as my primary platform for my home machine.

So, as jdmercha suggests, the option of reformatting the disk and reinstalling everything is a good one.

I just had another thought! Check to see if your hard disk is full. A full disk will slow the system response.

Have you tried to defrag your machine? A few years back a large pharmaceutical company was going to replace all of there machines for the same reason. All it took was a defrag (programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter) to speed things up. If this doesn?t work then reformat.

This is a tech. problem, in search of a solution.

It properly belongs in "Technical Q&A," not in "Discussions."

Please re-post there.

Thank you.

Do you have a text file that you copy and paste?

How about adding some diversity in these little police actions of yours?

Thank goodness you have taken on the burden of correcting everybody. You are truly a saint.

Pretty sure you said you defragged, did you look at the report? Pays sometimes do an analyse after the defrag - obviously you should get msg 'defrag not required at this time'
If it's slow enough to class as 'broken', yes start from scratch

This sounds like a temp file problem. Although you can clean out all of your temp files manually, you can save yourself a lot of time and grief by using a product like Webroot Window Washer.

Good luck.
