PC stops after low virtual memory

It started with not being able to access the web (broadband). 2 other pc’s connect ok. Scanned for viruses and ran spyware. Still having problem. Running xp, 40gb free space, 512 ram. would like to restore without reloading xp so data is saved. Can’t save data now cuz programs not working properly due to low mem. Help!!!
