PC stops after low virtual memory

By tobybul ·
It started with not being able to access the web (broadband). 2 other pc's connect ok. Scanned for viruses and ran spyware. Still having problem. Running xp, 40gb free space, 512 ram. would like to restore without reloading xp so data is saved. Can't save data now cuz programs not working properly due to low mem. Help!!!

You don't say if the system ever worked properly. If it is a current problem try the restore utility
Start/Programs/Accesories/system tools/system restore. Choose a restore point before first signs of current problems started. Doesn't remove data, or programs from system it just restores the system state back to when it was stable.

I tried system restore already. That didnt work. There appears to be a program(s) running and eating up memory eventually bogging down pc and stopping it.

the system has always worked fine (xp,80gb, 512mb ram) untill recently. something triggered low mem problem. can't process. Doesnt seem to be a virus. all components check out fine, so far.

The easiest way to recover and backup your data files is to install the hard drive as a slave in another PC.

You can also set the BIOS to boot from your CD drive and boot up from your XP CD.

Make sure to install XP over itself.
(The target folder should be C:\Windows)
XP will re-install as a clean fresh install.
While your program files will still be on the drive, you will need to re-install your applications, and any Windows updates.

Your data files will still be on the drive.
