PC WILL NOT POWER OFF -

If this beast is still under warranty i would trot it back to whereever it came from and INSIST that they fix it. It sounds like you have (at minimum) a power switch that is incorrectly installed and probably some issues with your power supply itself. This can get expensive real fast if you dont get on top of it.

I had almost identical problems with a "Name-Brand" PC and the tech ended up tossing up his hands and telling the sales folks to give me a new PC. Be assertive it is worth a try.

Since posting this question - the power supply has been replaced - video and network cards and Monitor and monitor cables have been switched with known good ones drivers are latest ones - i do have Norton on the system and i am aware of the problemsit causes but using MSCONFIG i have disabled everythng from starting up so it is a clean boot and the problem still occurs - Is also happening from safe mode - I have also disabled all devices from device manager and i have no conflicting IRQ's I have also downloaded and installed the MS shutdown implementation update which was created for this type of problem - I am suspecting more and more that it may be the Motherboard itself -according to Microsoft technet files and other research i have done this is what it is pointing me to. System is a little over 2 years old no Warranty!

A two part question for you: How old is the machine, and where did you buy it from?

The first answer about the switch and/or power supply may be possible, but that usually turns the machine OFF without warning, not leaving it on.

My suggestionis that you make sure you've got the latest drivers for your video card... I just installed Win2k and an obscure driver made the machine crash everytime tried to boot the computer in anything but safe mode.

Also, are you running Norton AntiVirus? There is a known conflict that makes the computer shutdown incorrectly when running Norton on a Windows 98 system. Check that too.

Problems with proccessors and memory can cause really strange symptoms sometimes. Before going the route of replacing the Mobo, i'd try swapping the memory first with a known good workstation. Then the proccessor if you have another Celeron 300.

Thought of that but w/o those type of extra parts to costly to have taken to a reputable shop and have them test these items memory has been switched though with known good chips and still have problem. Any one know of any diagnostic software that will do this? will give all the points to the one that can refer me to some reliable diagnostic software - free or not to expensive preferrably.

At the risk of being unhelpful...

I know a couple of techs that have used the software at this site (http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp)

It only checks memory but they have lowered the price to the right point ($0). Still checking with my buddies if they have any cpu testing stuff... will keep you posted.

TuffTest-Lite is a full hardware diagnostic prog that I've used several times with good results. It is self booting, and OS independent, and better still, it's free. You can download it here:
