PC will not recognize its HDD in any PC

By pjsplace ·
Customers PC went down and when trying to boot says no operating system which as we all know usually means it is not detecting the HDD! So I check the cable and sure enough it came loose. I put it back in but it still said the same thing. I tried user options of CHS still would not detect it. I took it out put it in a working PC and that PC would not detect it. I suspect it to be bad, but I too had this problem with my PC a few weeks ago and had a heck of a time getting it up and running. I putthe HDD in another PC formatted it and re-installed the OS, but the other PC detected the HDD, this one will not do that on either PC. Any help ASAP would be appreciated. I also put the recovery CD in but of course it will not work because it thinks there is no drive to install on and it is right there isn't because it can't find it.

Boot with the cover open and listen for the drive spin-up. If you don't hear it spin, the drive's bad. If you hear it spin, try getting the BIOS to detect it. If you can't get a BIOS to detect it (try this on at least two machines -- only change the drive, no cables), it's probably bad. If you can get a BIOS to detect it, boot with a DOS floppy and run FDISK /MBR or use Ranish Partition Manager (http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/) to rebuild the Master Boot Record and the PartitionTable.

Good Luck!

Thanks for trying but I did all that as explained in the question. I actually found the problem or resolution. I removed the battery after unplugging the power cord and holding the start button down for 15 seconds. I then replace the battery and replugged it in and wa la she started right up into the bios where the drive was detected both drives actually and here I am back on my PC and loving it. Thanks anyway

Also try the Utilities Floppy from the hard drive Manufacturer.
Also check the Power Supply.
Last week a PC came in, and it would not boot, and it had these same errors, plus sometimes it would say the ROM Checksum was bad. The power supply voltages were out of tolerance. (Too low.)
A new Power Supply got rid of the symptoms.
Regards, Chris
