PC Will Not Shut Down

By dmiles ·
I have dual boot setup on seperate hard drives W2K on drive 1 and Windows XP on drive 2

The problem is when I select shut down in XP the machine will reboot,it will at times shut down when using the power switch.

This does not happen with W2K,it will shut down properly from the diaglogue box.

Power management seems to set correctly, but I cannot rule this out the system has 256m memory, this is a new configuration machine and currently running diagnostics before adding more memory.
What could be causing this to happen?

Thanks in Advance

Hi,

I went round and round with my first XP system with it not shutting down.

After going through all the steps in the XP shut down trouble-shooting tutorial posted at www.aumha.org I finally corrected the problem by changing out my modem and sound cards.

While both cards are on the HCL, and work under XP on other systems, there was just some conflict with these cards and the motherboard I had in the system.

Chas I am not reecting your answer based on it being unacceptable, but I needed to run this by you.I will post the points for you later

I had the modem (Intel) and sound card (sound blaster Live in another system on a Asus brd,the same two parts are now set up on a Intel 865GBF brd. Could the brd being intel be the problem, the system will shut down using W2K

Mine was the other way around.

I had an Intel (Ambient) modem and a Aureal Vortex 2 sound card on an Epox Slot A board with a VIA chip-set and all was well.

The AGP slot on the Epox failed and I upgraded to an Asus socket A system (still a VIA chip-set).

It just would not shut down with the Intel modem.

I switched to a US Robotics modem about the same time I switched to a different sound card because of the problems with the XP drivers for the Aureal card, and suddenly, I could shut down.

So, yes, I would go ahead and try a modem with a different make chip-set.

USB devices and hubs can also cause strange startup and shut down problems.

Thank you for the help and will try another modem.
Also,I have a strong feeling that it may be something such as the USB as you mentioned.
