PC wireless using Airport base station

By Sue T ·
I have a laptop with a wireless card that I would like to connect to the network. We have several Airports that work great with the Macs and I would like to use the Airports for the PC also. I have installed FreeBase on the laptop and can see the airports and all the bridges between the buildings. Sometimes I can ping these machines and sometimes I can't. Sometimes I can get on the internet with this laptop and the next day I can't. We have printers that run on TCP/IP and I cannot find or print to them from the laptop. I was able to do a find for another computer and found this computer but I was not able to access it even though it has a shared folder that I am able to access from any computer that is using ethernet. What am I missing? The laptop is running Win98se. I have tried changing the name from ANY to the exact name of the airport and I also changed the Profile in configuration from Default to 101 and that also seemed to help because I could then ping other computers. The wireless card software also tells me that it has 100% signal. I think I am missing something somewhere in the configuration of either the laptop or the airport itself but do not know what.

is the laptop configured to be dhcp client or does it have a static ip address? to me, the intermittent ping/internet would be a problem with tcpip, maybe it's not getting an ip address or maybe it's getting one that conflicts with an identical one already on the network? as far as the file sharing goes, i am hazy as i am wondering if this is a Mac/PC issue...let's get the internet working, then worry about that? next time you can't ping anything from the laptop, do a winipcfg (Start/Run/winipcfg <enter&gt and see what it thinks it has for a ip address and gateway...?

I agree w/ Sgt. Shultz regarding the liklihood of a tcp/ip configuration problem, most likely on the laptop.

Sharing files between the two types of machines will be another matter entirely. There are software options available if you want to run a server, and you will want to read this article as well:

Good Luck :-)

The laptop is using DHCP and when I ran winipcfg the laptop was using the correct IP and gateway being assigned by the airport base station. The IP is not conflicting with another machine. I ran FreeBase on the laptop and it sees all of our wireless equipment. The wireless card software on the laptop says it is getting 100% signal strength. When my coworker looks on a Mac running Airport software he says my laptop is fading in and out even thou the laptop is showing 100% signal. The computer I was trying to access a folder on is a PC with a shared folder that I am able to access from any other PC without problem but when I run find computer on the laptop it sometimes finds the PC but then says the computer is not on the network or at other times that it isn't accessable at other times it doesn't even find the PC. The folder is accessable to anyone without having to use a sign on, you only have to have a password. Both the laptop and the PC are running Windows 98se. Also I tried to setup a printer that runs on TCP. I used the printers software which installs a monitor but it does not find any of those printers when I tell it to search for printers. I upped the number of hops to 10 which is more than enough.

Our school is mostly Macs and the Airports are only used for iBooks. Since the PC laptop came with a wireless card and I have heard it is possible to use the Airport with PCs also I would like to make this work so we can add wireless PCs next year without having to buy special equipment. The laptop is using a Gem Tek wireless LAN mini PCI adapter.
