PC with XP Home running slow

By cammie ·
P4, 1.7GHz, 128MB Ram(16MB shared), 20GB.
Very slow on startup, load os users & switching users. Starting of some programs slow but not consistently so. CPU sits sometime at 80% after startup (svhost&spoolsv.exe high)

In my opinion, esspecially with on-board video, you need more RAM.

I would step up to at least 256MB up to all that your motherboard can hold / you can afford.

Next, I just found a new XP speedup trick.

Clear out each users recent documentsfolder.
XP checks that the links in the recent folder are still valid when you open programs, or switch folders.

The location is:
C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Recent

You can delete as many shortcuts as you wish. If you want to playit safe, leave the last week or 2 in place.

if you're using multiple users especially, but even if just the one, 128 MB is the bare minimum of ram you should be using - and with 16MB of it shared (i assume to the Video) it's even worse!easiest way to make it run better is to upgrade to 256 atleast. DDR if possible.

The slow startup of some programs, sometimes but not all the time is also related to RAM. What is happening is it's probably swapping out to the swapfile.

If you dont want to upgrade RAM, clear out your startup listing, taking out things like OSA, MSN if you got it and other applications - the fewer icons in your systray the better.

Again - the best and easiest solution is to double your RAM. This is amazingly effective, and cheap to boot :)

Good luck.

I agree with the others that you need to upgrade your ram. a trick to change your pagefile settings is to go to My computer- properties, advanced-pagefile settings and change your settings to 2 and 1/2 times the amout of ram you have.
example
512ram
change minimum to 1280 also change maximum to 1280
click set button and reboot you should see a big improvement on the system
you can also change the way you startup on XP by going to visual effects tab and unchecking all the boxes that will give you faster starting
Good luck
