PC won't restart,XP Home SP2

By gn_au ·
Selected safe mode, last known good config, etc but with any option booting up gets so far in loading drivers and then hangs. Tried booting from XP Home Start up disks and system reports pci.sys is corrupt. I don't want to use Quick Restore CDs as I haven't backed up data files. Any suggestions?

I would try rolling your system back with system restore. If it will not roll the saytem back then you can do it normally. The location of the registry files are in system volume information is a copy of your registry. You have to turn off simple file sharing in windows explorer, tools, view, uncheck use simple file sharing. Inside of that directory you are going to have several folders. Look at the most recent date the computer booted. Inside snapshot copy _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE, _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
_REGISTRY_USER_.DEFAULT
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM
_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY
Copy to windows/system32/config rename current files, rename the ones copied, reboot and you should be good.

Yeah, after an hour and a half of switching the power off and on to try and get windows to boot, I riped my wireless keyboard remote from the desk and smashed my keyboard to pieces then stormed off to get a flat tyre fixed on my car, when I came back windows started normally, but couldn't log in my password untill I found my old keyboard. Havent turned computer off since, two weeks now.

I think your best solution is to slave your unit on another system & backup your data then do a quick restore off of your cd's.

you could salve your hd to another computer same operating system using their cdrom ide cable and power cable, save off your data, from their c drive run a few virus trojans scans, even online scans.
Then replace back to original machine as master, set the bios to boot from cdrom, choose R for recovery> wait till it loads, when it gets to the c windows dos prompt type in>
chkdsk /r press enter let it run till done.
then type in chkdsk /p press enter
finally type in fix boot C: press enter
once all 3 are done remove the xpcd, type in exit press enter, when it prepares to boot again tap f8 then choose last known good config,
fingers crossed it boots up now.
