PCI Mass Storage Controller

By eroundy88 ·
I have a Windows 98 SE System and everytime I plug in a USB SanDisk Compact Flash Reader and Windows 98 goes to detect new hardware I get blue screens. In the device manager the there's a big yellow question mark next to the PCI Mass Storage Controller listed under "Other Devices". The USB Controller is fine. Could the PCI Mass Storage Controller problem be causing the blue screens when I try to plug in the SanDisk Reader. Any suggestions? If I need to install a driver for the PCI Mass Storage Controller, where can I get it? One more thing - On boot up there are 3 PCI Mass Storage Controllers listed under PCI devices, 1 is using IRQ 9 and 2 are using IRQ 11 (if this helps).

HELP!
Emma

PCI Mass Storage Controller

This is a feature of many new motherboards. There are the two standard IDE ports (that the CMOS Setup addresses on its first page) and an extra software-driven pair that can be disabled/enabled in the CMOS setup but will not actually list the drives connected. The driver for this controller is usually on your motherboard's driver CD, but not easily found. To install the driver, first eliminate all references to the PCI Mass Storage in the Windows' Device Manager. Make sure that you check inseveral places because they can show up in more than one place sometimes! Then, click on REFRESH on the Device Manager page. The new hardware found message will appear. Once identified, tell Windows that you "Have Disk," and browse through your motherboard's CD until you find the inf" file. It will probably be in a sub-folder called PCI Mass Storage, but might be cryptic. If you are unable to find it this way, don't get worried. With almost every motherboard I have found this controller on, I have also found a read-me file that explains the process that I have just outlined (maybe more clearly than my attempt at explaining it from memory). Good luck.
