PCI Serial Controller

By awhitna ·
I just installed W98 on new system. During startup Windows want the driver for the PCI Serial Controller. What exactly is the PCI serial controller and where would I find the correct drivers for this?

PCI means: Peripheral Component Interconnect

Serial Controller is, in essence, your serial port(s).

This is (most likely), built into your motherboard. The driver you need will be on your Windows 98 CD. The next time you are adked fot it, insert your Win98 CD, and direct the path to your CD Rom drive.

That will take care of it.

I have tried all folders on the Windows CD. Also on the CD that came with my MB there is a file called inf. I extracted this file to the HD and attempted to load the driver form there. It seem no matter which file I point it to I still get the message "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device." The PC seems to be operating OK without the driver, however when I go into device manager and see that yellow exclaimation point, it makes me think something must be wrong.

A PCI Serial Controller is usually a modem in the PCI expansion bus. If you have the CD-ROM or floppy driver disk that came with the modem, you can use the ".inf" file contained on the disk to install your modem. If you do not have the original disk, turn off the system, pull the modem, and identify its brand or chipset and version number. Using this information, go to www.winfiles.com and try to find the correct driver. With the power off, re-install the modem and try to install the driveryou have found. If you cannot get the correct driver, you may not be able to make the modem function properly in your system.
Please not that if the modem is integrated on your motherboard (not removeable), then the driver will be found somewhere on your motherboard's driver disk. Good luck.
