Ar you using your com ports for any other devices? You have the option to disable them in bios so that they don't conflict with your modem. They all try to use the same interrupts(IRQ's)and you can run into problems trying running the modem on a shared irq with say your mouse. Normally a pc has 2 serial ports one possibly for the mouse unless your using the round ps2 style connector. If you use no other serial 9 or 25 pin device you can disable 1 or both of them so your modem can be com2 orcom1.

You should be able to find your driver here:

http://www.conexant.com/support/

If not there, then check the Compaq support links at www.hp.com for your specific model Compaq.

Before installing the driver, remove ALL modems listed in Control Panel / Modems.

Also, many controller-less modems require that you install the software before installing the hardware, so check the readme and follow the instructions.
