i installed a USB/Firewire PCI card, and when i try to use a USB external hard drive, it freezes my computer. all the drivers are installed, and there are no yellow ! in the device manager. all drivers are updated. device manager does not report any conflicts. i have the latest updated windows stuff, including SP2. the device manager seems to read and list the card properly. there is however, a device manager listing for an unknown device.

ASUS P5RD1-V mobo (latest BIOS)
2GB RAM
ASUS EAX550 256MB graphics card installed in PCI-Express 16 slot (working fine)
Firewire Card in PCI 1 (working properly)
USB/Firewire Card in PCI 2 (causing the problems)
PCI 3 slot unoccupied
i have also tried moving the erring card to PCI 3, but same thing.
