PC's take a long time to see network

By senitaf ·
Run a Windows NT network with 40 PC's connected running Win 9x and Win 2000. Several of them now seem to take ages to view the network, or even find it. Any suggestions as to what I can check.

Thanks

PC's take a long time to see network

tons of stuff can cause slow browsing. it is really worth a hour or two on the support.microsoft.com browsing the results of searching for 'slow browse'.
Meanwhile, here is what to try. pare down to tcpip for your sole protocol if at all possible.you will need to keep netbios on tcpip. remove all protocols but tcpip on all machines if you can. ipx/spx is real culprit if misconfigured and good chance it is, especially if you used to have netware server on network.
find out how browsing works. browser elections and corrupt browser lists and bad connectivity to browse master will all cause delays. you see it only on a few machines so that is a clue. check event logs on those machines. find out who is browse master for bad machines (use browstat util on NT resource disk). keep machine who is browse master up and running all the time...browse masters will be elected on a network depending on what os they are and other stuff. disable potential to become browse master on as many machinesas you can to shorten the fight, er, election time...
i troubleshot this problem for about 4 hours on my network. i still actually don't understand all that much about browsing but with the mskb clues and event log clues and browsestat util i was able to make machines browse very fast...sorry don't have the step by step you are looking for but would say, event logs and protocols and see how that goes...

Try to clean a few computers to see if it helps. Run system cleanup on 98 computers, its in system tools. Remove all tmp, cookies and chk files. Delete them compleatly from the computer. I use Window Washer on my 98 computer because it finds and removes more then I can. Use your bios to boot faster, read your motherboard manual to find the best settings for faster bootup! And run scan disk then defrag after that shut down and wait a few minutes and reboot.
