    PDC NOT IN THE DOMAIN?

    Locked

    by boikanyo.geo ·

A PDC for an NT domain has been running fine until it was rebooted on the 11th July 2000.

The server was rebooted at 11:03am. When it came up, It was looking for a trusted domain and could not locate it.No User could see the PDC and the PDC could not see any other pc on the network.
I have done troubleshooting and consulted MS technet! no answer to this problem yet!

Further, the server manager has all PC’s greyed out. If you select to see ALL and “Show Member of the Domain Only”, The PDC disappears and only the greyed pc remain.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Can you think of anything that could have happened prior to it being rebooted? This is a really weird thing and it leads me to believe that maybe you’re leaving some critical points out.

This can happen occasionally with work stations. The CID becomes corrupted or deleted. With those, I log on as an administrator and re-add the pc to the domain. Hope this helps.

Does it say it cannot find the PDC when running srvmgr on the server? Are you saying that it does not appear at all in srvmgr? Are you running WINS? Is it multi-homed? Did the netlogon service fail? What’s in the event log? Why did you reboot it? More information would be helpful. There are a lot of things can mess it up.

Can any PC’s be authenticated? Can you promote a BDC to PDC? IF it is a domain synchronization issue try synching the domain in server manager. There is a resource utility called NETDOM that you may want to look into for re-establishing the secure communication with a domain controller.

First I would suggest starting simple like others have said varify your network connection with the nic and hub, also see if your ip address are correct for your domain and try to ping other ip addresses on the domain. Lastly I would suggest promoting a BDC to PDC then on the problem PDC removing all your protocols and related service including the nic drivers shutdown remove the nic startup without nic. Shut it down again and rebuild it, including Service Packs after services and protocols areinstalled.

Hi Thanks for your response, by the time I got this response I had already started rebuilding the server. This is what happend and what was the problem:-

I tried doing a repair on NT. This corrupted the Windows explorer and that could not start.Second thing: Reinstall over the current installation and install all service packs upto SP6a (that was the last installed SP).
By the time I fineshed (5 hours later) I discovered that the infrastructure was the problem and not the server.
i.e The network is a pure 10BaseT Halfduplex, If you add any hardware with 100BaseT or any other duplex mode, it would not see the network except the same duplex clients. – I reconfigured the network card from a Auto mode to 10BaseT HalfDuplex and that finally fixed the problem.

      Question
Please check the Event viewer to see any fault error

1)Do your company only contain 1 domain or two domain with trust relationship setup?
2)Do your company have BDC setup or not?
If yes. let check whether the BDC is prompt to PDC ornot ?
3)Whether the PDC is changed to the domain name other the domain name of other PC?

Why did you re-boot the Server? Did you install any software/services which required the re-boot? If so, you may need to re-install whatever service pack you are running. Also, is the Server Service running? Some more details would help.

When the PDC can only see it self and not other workstation even though the workstation has been added. There are server reasons why.

      1. Protocol has been corrupted
      2. SID has been corrupted
      3. NIC card is malfunctioning

The first thing you should do is try to ping any workstation currently running on your network. Even if the PDC cannot see it using NetBIOS, they can always see other workstation via their IP address. If you get destination unreachable on the same subnet as your PDC then either you NIC is malfunctioning or the proctocl is corrupted. Try to install a new NIC or remove the protocol and reboot then install it again and again also reboot. If that don’t solve the problem then it must be a corrupted SID. The only choice you have left is to restore the server from backup tape if you want to keep the same SID. I hope that helps.

You mentioned that you have done troubleshooting and consulted technet, so I am sure you have made sure it is not a network connectivity issue. All I can say is WOW! Something must be seriously wrong with the PDC. Do you mind emailing me with more info? I am very intrigued!
